Syncing photos with Picasa is easiest of all

While I have these photos on Facebook and Flickr, the easiest group for me to manage are the ones on Picasa. Just a click here or there and the changes I make on my computer are automagically reflected in the online gallery. I love that convenience.

Success with long exposure night photography

One of the upcoming episodes of our Live call in for Your Day is going to feature digital photography. We'll talk about whatever the callers want, but getting tough pictures captured successfully usually seems to be a recurring theme. Here is a long exposure night shot in fog that I took in downtown Greenville. If you like it, why not give it a click and mark it a fave at Flickr. If you've got a photo question you'd like us to answer on the show, why not put it in a comment on this post or drop me an email at the address on the sidebar.

Amazon buys Digital Photography Review

Amazon.com has acquired www.dpreview.com, the web’s most comprehensive (and perhaps our favorite) site for digital camera information and reviews. Founded in 1998 by Phil Askey, dpreview.com provides unbiased reviews and original content regarding the latest in digital cameras, and offers a host of features and forums designed to make it easy for consumers to find the camera that’s right for them. With its unique voice and in-depth technical reviews, dpreview.com draws millions of unique visitors each month.

“Dpreview.com is by far the most authoritative source anywhere for straight talk about new digital cameras,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “We at Amazon.com have been their fans for a long time, and we extend a big welcome to the dpreview.com team.”

“One of the difficulties of operating dpreview.com independently has been the balance between producing content and delivering new site features,” said Phil Askey, founder of dpreview.com.

“Now, with the support of Amazon, I’ll be able to devote more of my time to expanding and improving our features – such as product reviews and discussion forums while still delivering the high-quality content that our readers have come to expect.”

Dpreview.com offers in-depth reviews of the latest digital cameras and accessories, active discussion forums, digital photography and imaging news, sample images, a dynamic digital camera buyers’ guide, side-by-side comparisons of the most popular models, and the web’s most comprehensive database of digital camera features and specifications.

Since Amazon has only offered user reviews of cameras to date, it seems they will be incorporating their newly acquired source of independent reviews into their product descriptions, much as we see the book reviews on other parts of the site.

Geotagging with Picasa, Google Earth

From the Google sightseer newsletter:

geotagging in Google Earth, PicasaStarting with Picasa version 2.5, Picasa allows you to use Google Earth to quickly locate (or geotag) the place your photos were taken. You can then create a map in Google Earth to share your photos with your friends. The process is really simple. Once you have your photos in Picasa, simply select a group of photos you want to locate. Then choose the "Tools ->Geotag with Google Earth" option. Google Earth will open and a small window with thumbnails of your photos appears. Find the location where the photo was taken in Google Earth using search, or by moving to it with your mouse. Zoom in as close as you need to identify the location. Finally, select the "Geotag" button. You can also select a group of photos taken at the same location and choose the "Geotag All" option. The location information is stored in a standardized fashion in the photo file itself.
