It turns out some people are still a bit confused about 4G. They don't even know if they have it or not. In an attempt to dispel a couple of myths and get the listeners of the Your Day radio show a basic introduction, I sat down and talked to the folks at Verizon Wireless.

A visit to the Immedion data center (Video)
Our October Your Day radio program included a technology road show where I went out and visited a couple of tech companies and did some interviews. The segments appeared on ETVRadio (South Carolina's NPR stations) and also on the Your Day website as video. It was my great pleasure to be Master of Ceremonies at last week's Social Story Conference. I got to do back room interviews with most of the speakers, including Rick Murray of Edelman. Rick leads operations for Edelman in Chicago, and has had a great career in connecting people with brands. He is a firm believer in Social Media's role in the mix, and took a few minutes to answer my questions on how does a little guy compete in the crowded social media marketplace.

Face Movie in Picasa 3.8
Picasa has added a new feature in version 3.8 that creates slide show movies that synchronizes faces. I took some photos from a kids birthday party this weekend and added some music to come up with this demo.
My only trouble was in synchronizing the music. Picasa couldn't seem to figure out how long the music track was. I started with a Variable Bit Rate mp3 file and thought that might be the problem, so I switched to a fixed bit rate version. Still Picasa was wrong about the length of the track in the preview mode. I did the calculations manually and pressed the "Create Movie" button and all came out well.

It turns out that not everyone is on Facebook. (Who knew?) That means that there are some cool cats who have not yet seen the video that both introduces some of the guys who show up at Cigar Therapy and tells you that if you come on at 4PM on July 9th, you will get to see Keith Rodgers talking about his experience in running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

Crowdsource the annotation of your videos
Now you can approach the annotation of YouTube videos as a team. I think this is a great idea, because I've got a lot of videos that I could use a bit of help with. As a caveat, the annotations remain, of course, outside of the video meaning that they are going to show up in Google searches but may not even appear with the video if it's embedded on another website.

The YouTube team has just completed a major upgrade to to annotations, the interactive commentary you can add to videos. Now you can add annotations to other people's videos (with permission from the video owner, of course). And if you want to let your friends add annotations to your video, simply view the video and you will see a special URL in the "Video Owner Options" on the right (you can also access this URL from the annotations editor). You can disable the URL at any time, and you can always delete annotations added by others.

Video: The Red Elvises at the Handlebar in Greenville, SC
The Red Elvises came to The Handlebar in October and I shot several snippets of video from the audience knowing that I'd make a montage of it later. I shot the video using my Flip Mino, and went about making the montage, but couldn't get the sound right using only the software from Flip. Well, they updated the software to FlipShare and I installed the update which now allows you to replace the audio from your video with something else. The video below is all from the October concert and the audio is an mp3 of one of the Red Elvises songs which I downloaded from their officially sanctioned fan web site.
Thriller! MTV Videos now available online
If you are as old as me then you'll remember that MTV was once all about music videos. The channel was mesmerizing, is added compelling video to popular music in a format that for any years was absolutely addictive. You could turn on the channel, sit down in your bean bag chair and lose hours at a time.

Noah Feldman says politics and religion are technologies
One of my passions (you may have figured out) is the technology of communication. It seems to me that all people are programmers and computers at the same time. We come with certain programs built in and then build new programs for ourselves and others through persistent and repeated application of viral programming techniques. We develop new, hopefully beneficial, behaviors, as we see them in others and we also seed others with ideas that can then modify their behaviors as well.
This TED talk by Noah Feldman reminded me that Religion and Democracy are technologies used to control groups of people. I'd extend the metaphor to specifically say that they are programming frameworks that set parameters for conversation and transmission of ideas in the pursuit of group communication and control. Understanding these frameworks as technologies then effects how you approach their manipulation.
It's probably time to re-read The Diamond Age.

The hardest part about getting video posted to 12Seconds TV is keeping your video to 12 seconds or less. I shot four takes to say Thank You in under 12 seconds. Anyone doing anything cool with 12 Seconds? So far, I think I've only seen that Amy Wood has shown some behind the scenes video with it, which I thought was a very cool use of the technology.
